Giving Thanks–Past, Present, Future

Lanterns swung in the lower decks of the ship as 102 seasick men, women, and children tossed about in a cramped space the size of a volleyball court. All hatches were battened due to severe storms, stealing any hope of fresh air or light. The passengers survived on small rations of dried pork, beans, and [...]

Knee Work

Today’s devotion is the fourth in a series adapted slightly from Serving in His Steps: Focused Scriptures and Prayers for the Fast-Paced Life. It’s one of CTA’s newest products—an accordion-fold booklet with brief daily devotions and a pedometer to use while you walk. It makes a great thank-you gift for church professionals and volunteers who [...]

Pastor Appreciation Ideas

I recently pulled a coat I hadn’t worn for months out of the closet. As I put my hand in the pocket, I discovered three dollars which hadn’t seen the light of day since the last time I wore the coat! I love when that happens!
Recently I cruised the CTA website and decided [...]

A Notable Miracle

Just recently, as I was reading Acts 4, a phrase jumped out at me. I had never really taken time to consider it before.
To get the full picture, remember that in Acts 3, Peter and John were walking into the temple when a lame man asked for money. Instead of silver or gold, Peter and John [...]

Respect Life Sunday–October 4

Two of my friends–both agnostics–express deep frustration when Christians claim morality cannot exist apart from religion, particularly, the Judeo-Christian ethic. Both see themselves as moral people, and I’m sure they do try to do the “right” thing. The devil, of course, is in the details of how one defines “right” and who gets to decide on that [...]

The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4, 1776. John Hancock signed first, saying, “The price on my head has just doubled.” Benjamin Franklin urged unanimity, saying, “We must hang together or most assuredly we shall hang separately.”
While many Americans know at least that much about the Declaration of Independence, we may not know [...]

Prayer and the Constitution

The Constitutional Convention deadlocked over how large and small states could be represented equally. So troubling grew the dilemma that some delegates gave up and left. Then, on June 28, 1787, 81-year-old Benjamin Franklin stood up to speak. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Constitution became a reality. As recorded by James Madison, here’s what Franklin said: [...]

Liberty and Restraint

“The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” This famous quote is attributed to British statesman Edmund Burke, born January 12, 1729. Considered the most influential orator in the House of Commons, Burke stands out in history, for, as a member of the British Parliament, he defended the [...]

Constitution Day

One June 21, 1788, the U.S. Constitution went into effect when New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify it. The 55 signers of the U.S. Constitution included:

26 Episcopalians;

7 Congregationalists;
2 Lutherans;
2 Dutch Reformed;
