Are You a “Good Newser”?

Twenty thousand Gospel Silicone Bracelets later,

evangelism expert Pastor Scott Snow explains

how to share Jesus in everyday situations

It’s a typical Tuesday evening. After a long day at work, you’re ready to relax in your favorite spot on the couch. You sit, click on the television, excited to watch your Tuesday-night sitcom. But wait. Your show isn’t on. Instead, you see breaking news footage about a tree, a bicycle, and a clown. You wonder, “What in the world has happened?!” Only one person knows: the eyewitness.

As the news reporter interviews the eyewitness, everything becomes clear. The clown was trying to be eco-friendly by using his bicycle for transportation to and from children’s parties. He was on his way home when a fast-moving thunderstorm hit the area and caused a massive tree branch to collapse on the clown and his bicycle. The happy ending? The clown escaped with only scrapes and bruises.

Reporters often interview witnesses. Witnesses testify in courtrooms every day. And Christian witnesses change lives forever as they share what Jesus Christ has done.

“Christian witnessing is all about Jesus,” says pastor Scott Snow, an evangelism expert. “It’s when we tell others what Jesus means to us, what he has done for us, and about the promises he has made and fulfilled for us.”

Pastor Snow stresses that witnesses don’t need to function like members of a debate team. Christians need not be afraid that those to whom they speak will ask questions they can’t answer. We don’t need to use some “perfect” words or develop a textbook-like argument. What matters most is simply sharing the Gospel of Jesus.

“I like to call witnesses ‘good newsers,’” commented Pastor Snow, “because that’s what we are when we tell unbelievers about Christ’s message of hope and salvation. We don’t have to worry about saying exactly the right thing. If we share the Word of God, then his Spirit will touch the hearts of the people.”

So who exactly are those people that the Holy Spirit needs to touch? They are the people you see every day: coworkers, school teachers, neighbors, family members, and anyone else with whom you have a relationship.

“Oftentimes, these people become invisible to us,” says Pastor Snow. “But these are the best people to share the Gospel with, because we already have a relationship with them. They trust us, and we repeatedly have natural opportunities to witness to them.”

What are “natural opportunities”? Pastor Snow suggests that, for example, when a friend is in a crisis, you can promise to keep him or her in prayer—and then actually do it. Joyful times open opportunities, too. For example, perhaps your neighbor’s son is graduating from high school, and you give him a book with some Scriptures to guide him through college. It can also be as simple as leaving a Bible on your desk at work to spark conversation with coworkers during break times.

Still, many of us can feel like applying to a “witness protection program,” because we just don’t think we’re qualified. But as Pastor Snow says, evangelism is something every Christian can do, and appropriate tools can help a lot.

CTA has developed several easy-to-use witnessing tools that Pastor Snow uses and recommends when he educates people about effective outreach. The Gospel Story by Colors Silicone Bracelet is one of those products.

“The Gospel Silicone Bracelet from CTA is a wonderful tool,” remarks Pastor Snow. “The vivid colors bring attention to it, and I have a one-minute, thirty-second faith speech that I give each time I’m asked about the bracelet.”

Pastor Snow believes that a subtle tool like the Gospel Story bracelet is a great way to begin witnessing. “The CTA bracelet equips us to open the doors of witnessing opportunities. I think I’ve ordered about 20 thousand of them throughout my years of outreach work, and I’ve given nearly all of them away.”

If you ever saw a clown on a bicycle escape a falling tree branch, you would surely be quick to tell everyone you knew about what you had witnessed. Why not apply that same enthusiasm in your Christian witness? God has given you great love, joy, peace, and forgiveness through our resurrected Savior, Jesus Christ. Start today! Be a Good Newser!
