Celebrating the women in your church through a special luncheon
“All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother,” Abraham Lincoln once said. Although he was only nine years old when his mother passed away, it is obvious that she had a meaningful impact in his life. Many of us can relate to Lincoln’s words of gratitude and say them ourselves about our own mothers. The way mothers love and care for their children cannot be replicated. The lessons they teach are priceless, and their loving support means much, even after we become adults.
Once each year, sons and daughters take time thank their moms on Mother’s Day. They give a card and flowers or take the family out for a special lunch. Church members at Shiloh Baptist Church in Plant City, Florida, recognize the women of their church with a Mother’s Day Luncheon each year. It’s held in May—though not on Mother’s Day, of course. Anyone who has a mother is invited!
The honorees eat from fancy dishes and drink from glass goblets set on tables covered with fine linen. To make it even better, members of Shiloh’s men’s ministry group serve the dinner to the women. “Our ladies don’t lift a finger on this day,” says women’s ministry leader Lisa Gullinese. “They are truly pampered by the men.”
After dinner, the women enjoy a guest speaker and are presented with gift baskets that have been donated by church members and local businesses. This year, those in attendance will also receive a gift set from CTA’s Woman of God series. The set includes a 64-page devotion book geared specifically toward women. Each devotion focuses on godly gifts and attributes, using words that end in “tea,” for example, loyal-tea (loyalty) or beaut-tea (beauty). The book uses God’s Word to focus on many of the wonderful attributes the Savior creates in the lives of women.
Lisa enjoys giving the devotion book as a gift because it brings these women closer to God on Mother’s Day. “I love working with women and leading them to the Lord through His Word,” commented Lisa. “My passion is seeing the ladies get excited and involved in studying the Word of God so they can be a reflection of Christ to others.”
Don’t forget, Mother’s Day is May 9 this year. As you celebrate your own mom and all the other Christian women Jesus has placed in your life, be sure to thank them for all of their love, support, and kindness.
