So YOU are a VBS volunteer! First of all, thank you! Your willingness to help is a great blessing to the VBS director and all of the participants this year. It is often difficult to find people who are willing, much less available to help, so thank you!
Perhaps you are wondering, however, if your participation in VBS really makes a difference. Maybe you have a behind-the-scenes kind of job like decorating, or setting up snacks, or providing childcare for other volunteers. Be assured that your participation matters. No matter what part you play in VBS, you DO make a difference, an eternal difference!
Paul talks about the way each one of us makes a difference in 1 Corinthians chapter 12. He compares the members of a church (or a VBS team) to the different parts of the body. God made the body to work together so that all of the parts are needed and important.
God arranged the members in the body each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be?” (1 Corinthians 12:18–19 ESV)
The same is true of VBS volunteers. Whether you are helping with games, sitting at the registration table, or buying materials for crafts, each one of you is important and needed.
“But,” you may ask, “how is what I do making an eternal difference? Yes, I might be helping the children have a good time, but how is that part of helping them to know Jesus?”
Jesus promises us in Matthew 18:20 (ESV) that when we come together to do his work, he is there:
For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them.
No matter what part you play in VBS, Jesus is with you and working through you. Spreading God’s Word is the mission and, as all of you come together, the Holy Spirit is working in the hearts of every volunteer and every child.
Finally, God promises that where his Word is proclaimed, taught, and spoken, it will produce the results that he intends. In Isaiah, God says that just like rain is sent to water the earth, God sends his Word with a plan and a purpose.
So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it (Isaiah 55:11 ESV).
VBS is a big undertaking for any church. It is A LOT of work and many people are needed to accomplish that work. You are a needed and valuable part of spreading the message of God’s love and forgiveness through Jesus Christ our Savior. You may not see it now, but in heaven, God will show you the harvest that he produced through your service.
Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, please take our small offerings of VBS service and use it for your glory and for the good of all who participate. Use your Word and your Spirit to change our hearts and draw us closer to you. Help us to better understand the depth of your love through the gift of your Son, Jesus, and all that he did for us. Thank you for this opportunity to serve you and your beloved children. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
