“You’re not the sharpest pencil in the box!”
Calling someone dull is very sharp criticism. Sharp pencils are powerful, effective, and valuable. Dull pencils are pointless—in more ways than one—and hard to work with. Nobody wants to be a dull pencil.
In reality, we are all dull pencils. Sin has worn us down, eroded our power, and chipped away at our souls. God made us to be sharp, powerful, and effective; sin has made us dull and hard to work with. Sin can also make life seem pointless.
God’s Word is active and sharp. The Law we read and hear cuts us to the quick, leading us to see our sins and our need for a Savior. The Gospel of Jesus Christ then tells us of that Savior and creates faith so that we trust in him.
Scripture is like a sharpener for dull pencils, cutting away the guilt of our sin and its effects and making us useful for all kinds of holy tasks.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12 ESV).
Temptations hold out enticing promises, but if you give in, sin will grind you down. Maybe it’s done that already! If so, find a close friend, confidant, or pastor. Talk with that person about what has happened. Then have that person speak the forgiveness of Jesus to you.
