Editor’s note: This devotion is slightly adapted from the free downloadable devotion that accompanies CTA’s King’s Kid products.

Introduction

(Hold up an I’m a King’s Kid product.) Have I got a great deal for you! If you give me $1,000 you can have one of these great (name the product you’re holding). Bring your money right up! (Allow time for their response.) Why doesn’t anybody want one? If you don’t have cash, I’ll take a check or credit card.

Getting to the Heart

You know I’m teasing you. I’m going to give each one of you one of these (name the product) absolutely free. The reason I’m going to do that is because I love you—and, more importantly, God loves you!

God gives you a much greater gift than this (name the item). God picked you to be his child – a child in his kingdom. He says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9).

Everybody say grace. (Wait for response.) Grace is God’s wonderful kind of love for us. We never paid him any money. We never did anything special for him. Just the opposite! In fact, we disobey him. We fail to love and serve him, even when we try very, very hard!

But still, our heavenly Father picked us out and said, “I love you so much that I’m going to let my own Son Jesus die on the cross for you. He will take the punishment for all the bad things you have done and will ever do. Now you can live with me—you can be a King’s kid, here on earth and forever in heaven.”

Everybody say faith. (Wait for response.) Faith means believing what we can’t see. How many of you were there the night baby Jesus was born and laid in a manger? (Let children respond.) But do you believe it? Of course you do, because God tells us it happened. How many of you saw Jesus die on the cross? Do you believe he did it? How many of you saw Jesus come alive on Easter morning? Even so, do you believe he did it? That’s called faith.

So absolutely free of charge, through the suffering and death of God’s Son, you are a King’s kid. When you get worried about a problem at school, or about a friend getting sick, or about your mom or dad needing a job, ask your heavenly Father–the King! He’s a mighty, wonderful King! And you are his dearly loved son or daughter. He can take care of anything. He will love and protect and take care of you now and forever.

The Bible says, “We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). Because God chose us to be kids in his kingdom, we naturally want to thank him. The way to thank him is to show his love to other people. Go home today, give Mom or Dad a big hug, and say, “Jesus loves you.” Set the table before Mom even asks. Clean up your room all by yourself, even if it makes your parents faint. Sit down beside a lonely kid at lunch and introduce yourself. God calls these acts of love “good works.” Because God made you his child, you are his work of art, his beautiful, tremendous, stupendous poem, always ready to love and thank him. And God is so smart—he knows about the loving things you’re going to do, even before you do them. In fact, he helps you to do them! He’s quite a King, isn’t he? You’re pretty special, too.

Taking It Home

To remind you how special you are, I’m going to give each of you a King’s Kid (name the product) absolutely free. Keep it by your bed tonight. It will remind you that God picked you to be his own child. You didn’t have to pay anything or do anything. God just did—out of love. And he’ll help you do many things out of love for him too.
